The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that the Government of Israel has officially granted diplomatic approval to the first ambassador of Somaliland to serve in Israel, Dr. Mohamed Omar Haji Mahmoud (Mohamed Hagi).

This move follows the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Somaliland on 26 December 2025, based on agreements reached during the recent visit of Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar to Somaliland.

Dr. Mohamed Hagi, currently an advisor to the President of Somaliland, played a key role in facilitating the establishment of this diplomatic relationship. The President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Cirro), has appointed him as a full ambassador to Israel, following Israel’s full recognition of Somaliland on 26 December 2025.

The ambassador holds all the authority, rights, and responsibilities associated with the position, in accordance with the Constitution of Somaliland, relevant laws, and international diplomatic conventions, according to the President’s spokesperson.

This appointment comes as Somaliland-Israel relations are expected to enter a new phase, with both sides planning to expand cooperation in politics, trade, innovation, water management, and regional security.
