Last Shilling Standing: Mogadishu Traders Turn Their Back on Somalia’s Worn-Out Currency

Parts of Mogadishu have effectively sidelined the Somali shilling, with traders and public transport operators refusing to accept the country’s last circulating banknote. The move has disrupted daily life for low-income residents and intensified pressure on the government to fast-track a long-delayed currency reform.

The Federal Government of Somalia has strongly responded to a decision by the South West State administration to suspend cooperation between the two sides, amid escalating political tensions in the region.

In a statement, the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation said it is closely monitoring the recent developments in South West State and expressed concern over emerging political and security challenges in certain areas under the regional administration.

The federal government first commended the role of both citizens and the South West State authorities in safeguarding national unity and contributing to state-building, highlighting their active participation in constitutional review processes and the broader democratization of the country.

However, the statement made it clear that the federal government bears no responsibility for reported instability in certain areas of South West State, emphasizing its commitment to ending conflicts and resolving disputes through dialogue to protect the gains made in the fight against terrorism.

The ministry also sharply condemned the regional administration’s decision to halt collaboration with the federal government, noting that federal institutions continue to fulfill their constitutional and legal responsibilities toward the people living in South West State.

In addition, the federal government called on the South West State administration to resume cooperation and actively participate in national reconciliation and democratization processes. A message was also directed to local communities, traditional elders, and political leaders, urging vigilance against actions that could threaten security and peace.

This latest tension comes amid recurring political disagreements between the federal government and regional states, often centered on power-sharing arrangements, elections, and the implementation of the federal system. Observers warn that without renewed cooperation, such disputes could further strain relations and complicate ongoing governance and security efforts in the region.
