The United States Africa Command has confirmed carrying out an airstrike targeting ISIS fighters in the Calmiskaad mountains of the Bari region, in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia.

In a statement, AFRICOM said the strike was conducted on March 16 and targeted militants located approximately 45 kilometers southeast of the port city of Bosaso. The operation is part of ongoing efforts to degrade the operational capabilities of ISIS in northeastern Somalia.

AFRICOM noted that the extremist group established a foothold in the Calmiskaad mountain range in 2015 and has since posed a persistent threat in the region, particularly within Puntland.

“AFRICOM, in support of the Federal Government of Somalia, continues to take action to reduce ISIS capabilities that threaten U.S. interests and security in the Horn of Africa,” the statement said.

The command did not immediately confirm casualty figures, and it remains unclear whether the strike resulted in deaths or injuries.

Authorities in Puntland have been engaged in sustained military operations against ISIS since late 2024, reporting significant territorial gains in the Calmiskaad mountains. Officials say continued joint efforts with international partners are key to dismantling the group’s remaining strongholds and stabilizing the region.
