The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, today chaired a virtual meeting of the National Consultative Council (NCC), which brought together senior federal and state leaders.
The meeting was attended by the Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mr. Hamza Abdi Barre; the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Salah Ahmed Jama; the President of South West State, Mr. Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed (Laftagareen); the President of Galmudug, Mr. Ahmed Abdi Kariye (Qoorqoor); the President of Hirshabelle, Mr. Ali Abdullahi Hussein (Ali Guudlaawe); the President of North East Somalia, Mr. Abdikadir Ahmed Aw-Cali; and the Governor of Banaadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, Mr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Muungaab).
The National Consultative Council discussed the country’s latest developments, with a particular focus on the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen national unity and territorial integrity, address the ongoing drought situation, intensify the fight against terrorism, and accelerate the implementation of one-person, one-vote elections for local councils and federal member states.
After reviewing the situation, the Council issued a number of key resolutions. The Council reaffirmed its full support for the Federal Government of Somalia in fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities to protect and uphold the sovereignty, dignity, and territorial and social unity of the nation.
The Council commended the successful conduct of the Banaadir Regional Local Council elections and the lessons learned from the process, while agreeing to fast-track local council elections across the Federal Member States.
The Council welcomed the endorsement by the Somali Future Council of the Federal Government’s call for a National Consultative Forum scheduled to begin on February 1, 2026.
The Council also praised the achievements of the Somali National Armed Forces, working alongside the Somali people, in recent operations against Al-Shabaab militants.
In addition, the Council called for an urgent humanitarian response to the drought affecting several parts of the country.
Finally, the National Consultative Council expressed its appreciation to the United Nations Security Council, the African Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Arab League, IGAD, and international partners for their continued support of Somalia’s legitimate right to protect its sovereignty and territorial unity in accordance with international law.
