The Somali military court on Tuesday carried out an execution targeting a convicted member of the militant Group al-Shabab in Galkayo.
The convicted criminal, Abdullahi Ali Adan was found guilty of all charges levelled against him and sentenced to death by the firing squad.Â
Abdullahi Ali was prosecuted at the Somali Military court in 2019 after being suspected of killing a Somali soldier identified as Isse Abdullahi Ali who served in the elite US Somali trained Danab Unit.Â
He was found guilty of the murder of officer Isse Abdullahi who was killed in 2018.
The mayor of Galkayo Abdirahman Sheikh Hassan, who attended the execution carried by officials of the Somali Military Court said members of the militants will face the firing squad unless they reformed and left the group.Â
Mayor Abdirahman warned that the government will get hold of all criminals terrorizing the residents of the region.
“We are happy that a terrorist who has troubled people around here, attacking residents and killing soldiers has eventually faced the firing squad,†said the Mayor who spoke to the media shortly after the execution.
“I want to remind the population that there is no relationship between us and al-Shabab. Every member of the group found guilty in Galkayo and Galmudug will face death. There is nothing else between us and them,†he added.Â
Mudug Police Commander Col. Ali Muse Mohamud has warned members of the outlawed organisation which is opposed to the Somali government that their days are numbered.Â
“Any member of the al-Shabab militant group who is found guilty of disrupting the peace of the people will end up facing the firing squad,†said Mudug Police Commander.
Al-Shabab has networks of cells activated on need basis which conducts coordinated attacks and targets across Somalia.Â
This week, the Somali military court executed five convicted members of the Islamic State and Al-Shabab.
The Somali government has vowed to quash and put an end to Islamists who have besieged governments in Mogadishu for over 15 years.Â
