Five people have sustained injuries following car accidents in the break away region of Somaliland.Â
In a report released by the Somaliland police, at least Seven car accidents were reported across the country on Thursday. Â
The report said five people who sustained injuries are now nursing at various Hospitals in the region. The department of Police did not record any death as a result of the accidents. Â
Explaining in depth, the Police noted that 6 out of the 7 accidents were reported in Hargeisa, four people reported wounded.Â
The police did not clarify the level of the victims’ injuries in the statement sent to newsrooms.Â
One accident occured in Borama injuring one person.
The traffic police said they reached immediately at the scene and launched a preliminary investigation towards the accidents.Â
Recently, the police have been sending warnings to the drivers to keep the safety of the roads and anyone who fails to follow the government directives will be prosecuted.
Serious motor vehicle accidents are at an all-time high in the Somaliland region, intensifying concerns among citizens and officials about road safety.
According to the authorities, the accidents are a result of numerous issues officials are trying to remedy, including non-uniform placement of steering wheels in cars, lack of road safety signs and enforcement of traffic regulations, poor road conditions, and driver errors, such as driving in the wrong lane, at high speeds, or lacking adequate skill and experience
Poor general road knowledge and lack of traffic safety regulations has also been identified as one of the major causes of these accidents.
Road traffic crashes and injuries constitute a major health, economic and developmental challenge for many African countries.Â
With only 4% of the world’s motor vehicles, African roads witness more than 10% of the world total collision fatalities.
With further motorisation, the number of road traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities are expected to grow.
