Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (National Intelligence and Security Agency), with the support of international partners, has killed a senior commander of the militant group Al-Shabaab in a targeted security operation, the agency confirmed on Monday.

According to an official statement released by NISA, the planned operation was carried out in the Hantiwadaag area, which falls under Awdheegle district in the Lower Shabelle region of southern Somalia. The slain militant had reportedly been on the security forces’ wanted list for a long period due to his senior role within the group.

NISA said the operation specifically targeted the militant leader and was conducted with precision to avoid harm to civilians. The agency confirmed that no civilian casualties were recorded during the operation.

“The operation was carefully planned and successfully executed, targeting a senior Al-Shabaab operative who posed a significant threat to national security,” the brief statement said. “There were no reports of civilian harm.”

The intelligence agency reiterated its commitment to continuing similar operations aimed at dismantling the leadership and operational capabilities of Al-Shabaab, which has carried out numerous attacks against civilians, government institutions, and security forces across Somalia.

NISA also expressed appreciation to its international partners for their ongoing support in counterterrorism efforts, noting that such cooperation remains vital in strengthening Somalia’s security and stability.

The operation comes amid sustained security offensives by Somali forces against Al-Shabaab strongholds in Lower Shabelle and other regions, as part of broader efforts by the federal government to weaken the group’s influence and improve public safety.

Lower Shabelle has long been a focal point of counterterrorism operations due to its strategic location and history of militant activity. Security analysts say continued joint operations are expected as Somali authorities intensify efforts to eliminate remaining threats posed by extremist groups.
