Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hamza Abdi Barre, on Sunday evening officially launched the 3rd National Education Conference, which this year focuses on reforming and improving the country’s education system, strengthening curriculum development, enhancing teachers’ skills, and expanding access to education nationwide.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Hamza underscored the central role of education in Somalia’s development, describing it as the backbone of economic growth, social cohesion, and national security. He noted that the DanQaran government has given special priority to investing in education, teacher training, and the national curriculum to build a high-quality, efficient, and modern education system aligned with contemporary learning needs.
“The DanQaran government has implemented continuous training programs for teachers across the country and introduced systems to assess teaching quality, with the aim of producing educators who are equipped with knowledge, competence, and strong professional ethics,” the Prime Minister said. “We have also strengthened the unification of the national curriculum from primary education through higher education, ensuring that Somali students receive balanced, high-quality learning that meets international standards. These efforts demonstrate our firm commitment to building an education system that supports national reconstruction and development.”
Prime Minister Hamza highlighted that Somalia has made tangible progress in rebuilding its education sector through the adoption of key laws, policies, and frameworks, including the Education Act, the National Education Policy, and the Education Sector Development Strategy. He said these instruments provide a solid foundation for addressing educational needs, improving quality, and strengthening governance and administration within the sector.
The conference aligns closely with Somalia’s strategic development frameworks, including the Education Sector Strategic Plan (ESSP 2022–2026), the National Transformation Plan (NTP 2025–2029), and Vision 2060. All these plans recognize education as a critical pillar for human capital development, peacebuilding, good governance, and sustainable economic growth.
Held under the theme “Focused Vision and Quality Development,” the conference aims to assess progress made since the previous year, conduct a mid-term review of the Somalia Partnership Compact—which plays a key role in mobilizing international education financing through the Global Partnership for Education (GPE)—and evaluate accountability between the government and education stakeholders.
In his closing remarks, Prime Minister Hamza expressed his appreciation to local and international participants who attended the conference, including the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Djibouti, Dr. Nabil Mohamed Ahmed, and the delegation accompanying him, for their continued support and partnership in advancing education in Somalia.
