Somalia’s minister of labour and social affairs, prof. Saalim Aliyow Ibroow, has participated in the global labour market conference currently taking place in the kingdom of saudi arabia, bringing together more than 40 ministers and senior officials from around the world.
The high-level conference focused on the future of work, emerging trends in global labor markets, and the development of sustainable strategies and policy frameworks that respond to rapid technological advancement and evolving global economic conditions. Discussions highlighted the need for inclusive labor policies, skills development, digital transformation, and resilience in national labor systems.
During his intervention, Minister Saalim Aliyow presented an overview of the current state of Somalia’s labor market, outlining both the key challenges facing the sector and the opportunities for growth and reform. He emphasized the impact of prolonged instability, limited formal employment opportunities, and skills gaps, while also pointing to the country’s young population as a significant driver of future economic development.
The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government of Somalia’s strong commitment to implementing job creation programs aimed at empowering Somali youth and enhancing workforce skills in line with modern labor market demands. He noted that investing in human capital, vocational training, and entrepreneurship is central to the government’s strategy for reducing unemployment and promoting inclusive economic growth.
Minister Aliyow also underscored that labor market development remains a top national priority, with a focus on creating sustainable employment opportunities, strengthening labor institutions, and increasing youth participation in the country’s economic and social development. He highlighted the importance of international cooperation and knowledge-sharing in supporting Somalia’s labor reforms and long-term development goals.
