Last Shilling Standing: Mogadishu Traders Turn Their Back on Somalia’s Worn-Out Currency

Parts of Mogadishu have effectively sidelined the Somali shilling, with traders and public transport operators refusing to accept the country’s last circulating banknote. The move has disrupted daily life for low-income residents and intensified pressure on the government to fast-track a long-delayed currency reform.

The Minister of Defence of the Federal Government of Somalia, Axmed Macalin Fiqi, described the capture of the Mubaarak and Daarisalaam areas in Lower Shabelle as a significant victory following a three-day military operation named “Operation Badr.” The offensive, conducted by Somali security forces with support from African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM/ATMIS) contingents, aimed to liberate territories under the control of Al-Shabaab and dismantle their operational infrastructure in the region.

Minister Fiqi emphasized that the liberation of these areas forms part of broader efforts to reclaim territories held by Al-Shabaab and to secure key strategic locations. He noted that, unlike in previous years when military activity slowed during Ramadan, this year the Somali forces are intensifying operations, describing the holy month as an opportunity to double efforts against extremist groups in order to relieve the civilian population from ongoing threats and disruptions.

“The month of Ramadan this year is not a period of respite for terrorists; it is a month in which we intensify our operations against the Khawaarij to protect the people from the harm they inflict,” Minister Fiqi said.

According to the Defence Minister, the primary objective of Operation Badr was to remove Al-Shabaab from strategic bases in Lower Shabelle, destroy facilities used to assemble improvised explosive devices, and dismantle centers used for the collection of illegal taxes. Mubaarak, he explained, had been a key hub for planning attacks against Mogadishu and for the movement of militants between southern regions.

Minister Fiqi reported that nearly 50 Al-Shabaab fighters, including commanders, were killed during the operation, while casualties among Somali forces and AMISOM personnel were minimal. He urged the Somali public to continue supporting the national security forces and stressed that the government will maintain operations against Al-Shabaab until full security is restored across the country.

In addition, the minister extended a message to Al-Shabaab members, encouraging them to take advantage of the government’s offers for amnesty and reintegration programs available to those who defect from the group.

The operation marks a significant milestone in Somalia’s ongoing counterterrorism efforts, highlighting the government’s commitment to reclaiming territories, enhancing security, and disrupting the operational capacity of Al-Shabaab in key regions.
