Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Saturday met with the Chinese Ambassador to Somalia, Wang Yu, to discuss ways of strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

The talks, held at the Prime Minister’s office in Mogadishu, focused on boosting collaboration in key areas including security, trade, economic development and diplomacy. Prime Minister Hamza said the Federal Government of Somalia is keen to deepen its diplomatic engagement with international partners to advance shared interests, particularly as the country continues its recovery from decades of conflict.

He noted that Somalia values its long-standing and historic relationship with China, describing it as one founded on mutual respect, solidarity and support. The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of expanding cooperation in infrastructure development, investment and trade, stressing that such partnerships are vital to Somalia’s security stabilization and economic recovery efforts.

On his part, Ambassador Wang Yu reaffirmed China’s commitment to maintaining and expanding friendly relations with Somalia. He said Beijing remains ready to continue supporting Somalia in security, investment and economic development, while also backing the country’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.

Prime Minister Hamza thanked the Chinese government for its continued support, particularly in infrastructure reconstruction and humanitarian assistance, and praised China’s role in supporting Somalia’s development agenda.

The meeting underscored the growing partnership between Somalia and China, as both countries seek to enhance cooperation that contributes to peace, stability and sustainable development in the Horn of Africa.
