A colourful event to mark the 53rd anniversary of the Somali Navy was held on Saturday at the Mogadishu Sea Port the temporary base for the forces.
But as it marked its more than half a century existence, the Navy remains displaced with no marine base.
The Commander of the Somali Marine Forces Madey Nurow Sheikh Ufurow said its displacement from its previous base forced the celebrations to be marked at the Mogadishu seaport.
“Our previous base was issued out to a friendly nation by the government so the only place where we can hold our celebration is here,†Commander Ufurow told the media.
The Navy has once differed with the Emirati Ambassador to Somalia over a large and strategic piece of land near the Mogadishu seaport that was issued to the United Arab Emirates government by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s government.
