Garaad is a new robot developed by Zamzam University in Mogadishu, Somalia, as part of an effort toward technological advancement in the country. Led by Abdiasis Hassan Ahmed, head of the university’s technology department, this project symbolizes Somalia’s aspirations and hopes for a future driven by innovation and technology.
The idea for Garaad was conceived during the annual Community Aisummit Somalia conference, held in Mogadishu. This conference, focused on advancing Somalia’s technology sector, inspired the creation of a robot designed to modernize society.
Initially, a design was created, and the prototype of Garaad developed. Equipped with advanced capabilities, Garaad can engage in meaningful conversations, ask and respond to questions, and interact with people.
Beyond simple questions and answer interactions, The Robot can connect with people on an emotional level. The robot can engage in supportive dialogues, offering empathy and companionship, particularly to those experiencing sadness. It becomes a friend, helping people share their problems and alleviating their distress.
As Abdikadir Hassan Ahmed stated, “If we try, we can make something better.”
Abdikadir says “Despite the challenges encountered during development, our team is committed to further advancement.” Public reception of Garaad has been mixed; while many Somalis are enthusiastic about its potential, others have expressed concerns about the robot’s future.
Looking ahead, Garaad has a promising future. Its primary objective is to assist the Somali community, both domestically and abroad. particularly in areas like education, social services, and the development of technological skills.
The Robot exemplifies Somali progress and innovation in the field of technology.
