Rwanda has expressed solidarity with Somalia, aligning itself with statements issued by the African Union (AU) and the East African Community (EAC) in support of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, Rwandan officials said on Monday.

In a brief statement, Rwanda said it fully supports regional positions reaffirming Somalia’s unity and encouraged all parties to pursue a path forward grounded in peace, stability and shared prosperity, in line with international law.

The statement comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions following Israel’s recent announcement recognizing Somaliland, a self-declared breakaway region of Somalia, as an independent state — a move that has drawn strong condemnation from Mogadishu and widespread rejection across Africa and the Arab world.

The African Union and the East African Community have both reiterated that Somaliland remains an integral part of Somalia and warned that recognition of breakaway regions risks undermining regional stability and established international norms.

Somalia has launched an intensive diplomatic campaign, urging international and regional bodies to reject Israel’s decision and reaffirm long-standing principles protecting state sovereignty and inherited borders in Africa.

Rwanda’s statement adds to a growing list of African states backing Somalia’s position as the dispute moves onto major diplomatic platforms, including the United Nations, where Somalia is set to assume the rotating presidency of the Security Council in January.
