Three police officers sustained injuries when suspected Al-Shabaab fighters attacked a Special Operations Group (SOG) camp in Fino, located in Lafey Sub-County, Mandera County, on Friday night.
Initial reports suggest the assailants stormed the camp, but officers quickly fought back and managed to repel the assault.
According to police sources, the militants employed Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs) and PKM machine guns during the raid.
SOG personnel responded rapidly, exchanging heavy gunfire with the attackers for around 25 minutes before forcing them to withdraw.
The injured officers were rushed to receive medical care, while security forces launched a pursuit operation to track down those responsible.
Authorities have since deployed additional troops to the area as search efforts continue for the militants who fled after the unsuccessful attack.
Fino, situated close to the Kenya-Somalia border, has seen repeated attacks by suspected Al-Shabaab militants due to its proximity to the frontier.
This latest incident adds to a pattern of security breaches and attempted strikes in Mandera County, a region frequently targeted by the Somalia-based militant group.
On Wednesday, police in Mandera had foiled another attempted Al-Shabaab attack when militants targeted the Jabi Quick Response Unit (QRU) Camp in Lafey Sub-County shortly after 7:00 PM.
Early reports indicated that around ten heavily armed fighters approached the camp from the northeast and opened fire, in what authorities believe was an effort to overrun the facility.
