Somaliland police have detained Sheikh Mohamed Ali Kaariye, a prominent religious figure, after he posted messages on social media opposing the recognition that Israel extended to Somaliland yesterday.
In a Facebook post, Kaariye reportedly wrote: “Rise, rise, disbelief has come, rise, the Jews are here, Netanyahu says no, rise.” He was reportedly arrested shortly after publishing the message.
A statement from Somaliland Police said that individuals suspected of openly opposing the unity and sovereignty of Somaliland have been taken into custody. The police warned that legal action would be taken against anyone engaging in activities deemed harmful to Somaliland’s peace, security, or statehood.
“Citizens of the Republic of Somaliland are urged to collectively oppose such individuals and to cooperate with Somaliland Police,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior and Security congratulated the public on the recognition and called on citizens to remain vigilant. Police forces across Somaliland have been placed on high alert.
The ministry stated: “We inform the public to remain vigilant in protecting the security and sovereignty of Somaliland, and to closely monitor any forces seeking to undermine the interests of the people, whether directly or indirectly.”
Israel officially recognized Somaliland yesterday, becoming the first country to do so after Somaliland had sought international recognition for 35 years. Additionally, U.S. media reports suggest that South Sudan may have also recognized Somaliland, although this has not yet been fully confirmed.
