The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) held a special meeting to assess the evolving situation in Somalia and the activities of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
Discussions focused on the latest political developments in the country, as well as the financial challenges facing the mission and potential solutions to address them.
Algeria’s Ambassador to the African Union, Mr. Mohamed Khalid, reaffirmed his country’s support for the stability of Somalia and its ongoing commitment to peace efforts. He emphasized Algeria’s readiness, as a PSC member, to continue assisting the Federal Republic of Somalia in its fight against terrorism and in strengthening peace, in coordination with regional and international partners.
The ambassador also stressed the importance of reaching consensus-based solutions to the financial challenges confronting AUSSOM, highlighting that this is crucial for enabling the Somali government to fully assume security responsibilities. He reminded the PSC of the UN Security Council’s role in ensuring sustainable funding for the mission.
The AU Council proposed several options regarding AUSSOM’s future, aimed at helping Somalia achieve lasting stability and strengthen government institutions. These proposals will be reviewed in consultation with contributing countries and the AU Military Staff Committee before being submitted to the PSC.
The Peace and Security Council of the African Union is expected to issue a communiqué on the matter in the near future.
