The First Instance Court of Mudug Region has sentenced Hodan Mohamud Diriye to death by firing squad for the murder of 14-year-old Saabirin Saylaan, who lived with her family in the region.
The verdict comes after a lengthy trial that was broadcast live on social media, drawing widespread attention and sparking national debate about child protection and community safety. In addition to Hodan’s death sentence, the court handed a one-year prison term and a $500 fine to Saabirin’s 65-year-old husband, who was found to have participated in the crime.
During the trial, Hodan denied killing Saabirin but admitted to regular physical abuse against the girl. The court ruled that evidence presented clearly showed her direct involvement in the murder. Both defendants have one month to appeal the decision. Hodan’s lawyer confirmed that an appeal has already been filed, stating he is not satisfied with the ruling.
Saabirin’s body is expected to be released to her family this afternoon for burial. The tragic case has already sparked protests in Galkayo, which resulted in one death and significant property damage, reflecting growing concerns about public safety in the area.
