Mogadishu, – The Federal Member States of Puntland and Jubbaland have issued strongly worded press statements on Somalia’s current political situation, directly accusing President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of derailing the country’s priorities and deepening divisions. Both administrations also voiced support for the “Somali National Salvation Forum”, a coalition of opposition groups calling for inclusive political dialogue.

In its statement, the Jubbaland administration accused the Federal Government of abandoning key national agendas, particularly the war against terrorism and efforts to preserve Somali unity. Jubbaland argued that the current leadership had failed to unify the Somali people and instead pursued “short-term political interests” that weakened public trust.

“It is unfortunate that the Federal Government has failed to provide leadership that unites the Somali people, while remaining constantly preoccupied with narrow political gains,” the statement read. “Jubbaland believes the salvation of the country lies in a genuine national consultation process and responsible leadership that takes charge of Somalia’s future.”

The Puntland administration went further, explicitly condemning President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for what it described as political interference, manipulation of constitutional institutions, and division of political organizations. Puntland warned that the President’s actions were fueling instability and undermining prospects for consensus.

Puntland reiterated its longstanding call for elections to be held through an inclusive political agreement, stressing that the President’s constitutional mandate will end on May 15, 2026, and urging him to prepare the ground for a political transition.

“Puntland condemns the flawed policies of the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, who is interfering with and dividing constitutional institutions and political associations,” the statement said. “This culture of interference and division is rooted in personal ambition, repeating mistakes of the past that brought Somalia political and security collapse.”

Both Puntland and Jubbaland emphasized their support for the Somali National Salvation Forum and expressed readiness to participate in any efforts to steer the country out of its current political deadlock.

Somalia has faced mounting political tensions in recent months as opposition groups accuse President Hassan Sheikh of centralizing power and sidelining Federal Member States. Disputes over election timelines, constitutional reforms, and power-sharing have heightened uncertainty ahead of the next scheduled presidential transition in 2026.

The joint criticism from Puntland and Jubbaland reflects deepening rifts between the Federal Government and key Federal Member States. With both administrations aligning themselves with the National Salvation Forum, Somalia’s political landscape appears increasingly polarized, raising concerns about stability as the country approaches a critical electoral period.
