Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni has launched high-level consultations in Garowe on Somalia’s disputed elections and Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, moves that could shape Puntland’s stance and ties with Mogadishu.

Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni, accompanied by Vice President Ilyas Osman Lugatoor, has begun a series of political consultations in Garowe amid mounting national tensions over Somalia’s electoral process and Israel’s recent recognition of Somaliland.

The talks brought together senior Puntland lawmakers, including members of the Puntland Parliament and Puntland representatives serving in both chambers of the Federal Parliament of Somalia.

Among those in attendance were Second Deputy Speaker of the Puntland Parliament Mohamed Mahmoud Issa, former Puntland President and current senator Abdirahman Mohamed Farole, and other senior political figures.

Discussions focused on the overall political situation in Somalia, with particular attention to:

  • The stalled and disputed federal electoral process
  • The regional and national implications of Israel’s recognition of Somaliland

The meeting was held late Wednesday night at the Puntland Presidential Palace in Garowe, the regional capital.

Puntland is a key federal member state whose political stance carries significant weight in national decision-making. Its position on elections and territorial integrity could influence broader federal consensus at a time of heightened diplomatic and security uncertainty in the Horn of Africa.

According to officials familiar with the discussions, President Deni plans to continue consultations with:

  • State institutions
  • Political leaders
  • Civil society representatives

The outcomes of these engagements are expected to inform strategic decisions Puntland will take regarding Somalia’s contested federal elections and its response to developments surrounding Somaliland.

Somalia remains locked in political deadlock over its electoral framework, while Israel’s recognition of Somaliland has triggered strong opposition from the Federal Government and several regional states, who view the move as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Puntland’s ongoing consultations signal a coordinated effort to shape its response to pivotal national issues. Decisions emerging from Garowe in the coming days are likely to play a decisive role in determining Puntland’s political direction — and its relationship with the federal government — during one of Somalia’s most sensitive political moments in years.
