More than 450 families have fled Xagar district in Lower Jubba region due to escalating security threats posed by extremist groups and the compounded effects of ongoing drought. These displaced families have sought refuge in Afmadow district, also located in Lower Jubba.
The number of displaced individuals continues to rise as more families arrive at the displacement camps in northern Afmadow. The majority of the displaced are women, children, and elderly individuals who are facing extremely harsh living conditions, with signs of malnutrition, hunger, and severe thirst apparent among the population.
The Mayor of Afmadow stated that the local administration has taken responsibility for providing shelter and basic support to the displaced families. Temporary accommodation has been arranged, and relief supplies—including food, water, and other essential items—are being distributed while awaiting further humanitarian assistance.
The displaced families are among the most vulnerable in Somalia, impacted not only by persistent drought affecting large parts of the country but also by the continuous harassment and threats posed by extremist groups in rural areas.
Officials and local authorities have called on regional governments, humanitarian agencies, and international partners to urgently provide humanitarian support to address the immediate needs of the affected families. Without timely intervention, these displaced households face severe risks to their health and well-being.
The situation underscores the ongoing humanitarian challenges in Somalia, where insecurity and climate shocks continue to exacerbate the vulnerability of communities in rural and conflict-affected areas.
