The President of Somalia’s Southwest State, Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen, has congratulated the people of Banadir Region for what he described as a peaceful, transparent, and responsible participation in historic local government elections, held under the one-person, one-vote system.

In a statement released on Thursday, President Laftagareen praised Banadir residents for demonstrating political maturity, civic awareness, and democratic commitment, noting that the elections represent a major milestone in Somalia’s long journey toward governance based on the will of the people.

The Southwest State leader emphasized that the successful conduct of the elections signals a turning point in Somalia’s democratic transition, where citizens are increasingly reclaiming their constitutional right to choose their leaders directly.

“These elections are a historic step toward people-centered governance and accountable leadership,” he said, adding that public participation remains the backbone of sustainable democracy.

President Laftagareen also commended security forces, electoral commissions, and government officials involved in organizing and securing the vote, crediting their coordination and professionalism for ensuring that polling took place in a safe, calm, and orderly environment.

Looking ahead, the President urged Somalis across the country to remain actively engaged in future electoral processes, stressing that inclusive participation is essential for strengthening national unity, democratic institutions, and long-term development.

President Laftagareen’s message adds to a growing chorus of national leaders recognizing the Banadir elections as more than a local vote—they are a national signal. As Somalia cautiously advances toward broader direct elections, the peaceful participation of Banadir’s citizens stands as proof that democratic renewal, while long delayed, is firmly back on the table.
