The Mayor of Mogadishu and Governor of Banaadir Region, Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Muungaab), today received his voter card for the upcoming local elections in Karaan District, marking a significant step in Somalia’s ongoing democratic process.
The ceremony was attended by several high-level officials, including the Chairperson of the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) and Boundaries, MP Osmaan Hadoole, the Deputy Security and Political Affairs Commissioner of Banaadir Region, Mohamed Ahmed Diiriye (Yabooh), the District Commissioner of Karaan, and other senior government representatives.
Addressing the gathering, Mayor Muungaab highlighted the critical role of local elections in strengthening democratic governance and ensuring broad citizen participation. He urged all residents to exercise their right to vote freely and to engage actively in the electoral process.
“The local elections provide an opportunity for the citizens of Mogadishu to shape their governance and future. I call on all residents to participate fully, responsibly, and without fear,” Muungaab said.
The Mayor also commended the leadership of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in advancing more inclusive elections compared to past practices, noting that the current process allows broader citizen participation and a transparent vote.
On security, Dr. Muungaab reassured the public that the situation in the capital is stable, with security agencies fulfilling their responsibilities. He emphasized that substantial progress has been made in ensuring public safety and that attempts by vested interests to destabilize the city through violence or unrest have been contained.
Finally, the Mayor called on Mogadishu residents to play an active role in maintaining peace and stability, working alongside authorities to ensure the success of the local elections and the consolidation of good governance.
