Mogadishu, Somalia – Somali referees Omar Artan and Ahmed Kaafi “Shine” have marked a major milestone for the country’s sporting community after earning international certification under the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Their rise comes as Somalia continues to rebuild its sports institutions despite decades of conflict and insecurity. The two officials, both products of Mogadishu’s local leagues, are now among the continent’s recognized referees — a signal of the growing talent pipeline within Somali football.

In a landmark achievement, CAF named Omar Artan as Africa’s Best Referee for 2025 on November 20, making him the first Somali to receive the award.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud later hosted Omar at Villa Somalia, commending him for elevating the country’s profile.

“Omar’s success shows how young Somali referees can move from local pitches to international arenas through discipline and hard work,” an SFF official told Dalsan Media Group.

Both Omar and Ahmed Kaafi “Shine” are widely regarded as self-driven professionals who built their careers from community-level competitions to the regional stage. Their recognition underscores Somalia’s increasing presence in African football and the determination of young officials committed to international standards.

President Hassan Sheikh described Omar’s award as “a proud moment for Somalia and a reminder to our youth that perseverance leads to achievement.
