The Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport of the Federal Government of Somalia,

Mr. Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur (Jaamac), has begun consultation and awareness-raising meetings in Waajid District, Bakool Region, on the implementation of one person, one vote elections and promoting public participation.
Minister Jamac held meetings with the Waajid District Council, Traditional Elders, and Youth, listening to suggestions and views on the most appropriate way to achieve transparent and fair elections, while empowering the people to directly elect their political representatives.
The Minister noted that one person, one vote elections are an important step towards strengthening democracy, transparency in leadership, and improving public administration in the country, urging the people of Southwestern Somalia to play a prominent role in the country’s political process.

The Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport of the Somaliland Government and the people of Waajid district in Bakool region today lined up to register for the one-person, one-vote elections, which are taking place in the country after 50 years. The Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport, Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur, who registered today in Waajid district, said he was preparing to contest in the one-person, one-vote elections.

Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur is a Somali politician and diplomat who currently serves as

the Minister of Defense in the Federal Government of Somalia, a position he has held since 2021. He is particularly noted for his firm commitment to the fight against the terrorist group Al-Shabaab, aiming to strengthen the country’s security forces and weaken the group’s influence during his tenure. He previously held the position of Minister of Justice from September 2020 to September 2021.

Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur played an active role in the signing of the Defense and Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement on February 8, 2024, with Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler in Ankara, Türkiye. The agreement aims to improve military-financial cooperation between the two countries and Somalia’s fight against terrorism. The deepening relationship between Somalia and Türkiye has been ongoing, especially since Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Somalia in 2011.

Nur has also held several key positions in the Somali government, including as

the Senior Adviser to the Speaker of the House of the People in the Somali Federal Parliament from August 2018 to 2020. Nur served as the Deputy Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) from May 2017 to August 2018 and as the Acting Director of NISA from October 2017 to February 2018. Earlier in his career, Nur played a significant role in the country’s national security apparatus.
