Mogadishu – September 13, 2025 — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Saturday officially inaugurated the newly built headquarters of the National Reconnaissance and Intelligence Command of the Somali National Army, a state-of-the-art facility aimed at strengthening the country’s defense and security capabilities.
The new command center, constructed with modern design and advanced technology, is expected to significantly enhance the army’s intelligence-gathering operations, operational planning, and strategic coordination in the fight against terrorism and threats to national stability.
President Mohamud, who also serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Somali Armed Forces, presided over the ceremony. He praised the Ministry of Defense and the Somali National Army leadership for their persistent efforts in strengthening the country’s defense institutions.
The President described the facility as a symbol of Somalia’s commitment to rebuilding its military and safeguarding national security after decades of instability. He noted that the advanced technologies integrated into the center would improve the effectiveness of ongoing security operations, especially against extremist groups such as al-Shabaab.
Following the inauguration, President Mohamud visited the Ministry of Defense, where he received a detailed briefing on recent battlefield successes by the Somali National Army and allied local forces. The reports highlighted key gains in central and southern Somalia, particularly in Galgaduud and Lower Shabelle regions, where government troops have dealt heavy blows to extremist insurgents.
The inauguration comes at a critical time as Somalia continues to ramp up military operations with the support of international partners, while also preparing for the drawdown of African Union peacekeepers (ATMIS). Strengthening intelligence and reconnaissance capacities is seen as a crucial step in ensuring that Somali forces can independently secure the country once foreign troops depart.
By cutting the ribbon on the new intelligence and reconnaissance command center, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud sought to send a clear message: Somalia is investing in long-term security infrastructure and modernizing its armed forces. The move underscores the government’s determination to consolidate recent battlefield gains and demonstrate resilience in the face of persistent extremist threats.
