MOGADISHU – A targeted aerial strike coordinated between the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the Federal Government of Somalia has dealt a major blow to the Al-Shabaab militant group in Lower Juba, near Kismayo. The airstrike occurred approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Kismayo, a zone known for harboring extremist operatives and logistics networks.
On May 27, 2025, AFRICOM executed a precision airstrike based on real-time intelligence provided in coordination with Somali security agencies. The operation was aimed at neutralizing a key Al-Shabaab cell suspected of plotting attacks against civilians, Somali security forces, and international partners.
Preliminary assessments suggest that multiple militants were either killed or severely wounded in the strike. However, the full extent of the damage is still being verified by ground reconnaissance units.

In a press statement issued by the Ministry of Information, the Somali government expressed gratitude toward AFRICOM and reiterated its unwavering commitment to fighting terrorism alongside both local communities and international allies.
“The Federal Government of Somalia thanks the United States and AFRICOM for their continued support in defeating Al-Shabaab. Together with our people and partners, we remain committed to ensuring long-term peace and security,” the statement read.
The government also noted that civilians were not harmed in the operation, underscoring the precision and caution exercised during the strike.
The airstrike targeted a remote area roughly 40 km northwest of Kismayo, a location with a history of militant activity, arms smuggling, and recruitment by extremist networks. The region has recently witnessed increased military pressure as Somali forces and allied militias push deeper into Al-Shabaab-controlled territories.
Security sources confirm that ground troops have begun sweeping operations in the aftermath of the airstrike to assess casualties, secure intelligence, and prevent regrouping by surviving militants.
Meanwhile, officials reaffirm that:
