Voting is underway across Mogadishu in the Benadir Regional Council elections, with 20 parties competing in a rare direct local vote that will shape district councils and influence the city’s mayor.

Senior Somali opposition figures, including Puntland President Said Deni, have arrived in Kismayo for the Somali Future Council Conference, amid tight security and rising tensions over elections and transitional arrangements.

“This is not an ordinary conference,” said one attendee arriving from Mogadishu. “People are coming here because they feel the system is stuck—and this may be one of the last chances to reset it peacefully.”
