The opening of a halal rotisserie chicken shop in a Paris suburb has sparked a political firestorm. Socialist mayor Karim Bouamrane tried to block the restaurant, “Master Poulet” citing smell and noise complaints from residents .A court ruled against the mayor but the dispute quickly escalated into a national debate, pitting two factions of the French left against each other.
The controversy, now widely known in France as “l’affaire Master Poulet” began simply: a low-cost halal chicken chain opened a branch in the town square of Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine. Mayor Bouamrane a Socialist immediately fought the restaurant’s presence. He attempted to block the entrance with concrete barriers was ordered by a court to remove them, and then replaced them with large plant pots to obscure the shop’s view. “Master Poulet” responded with provocative signs and satirical social media videos, while local residents have expressed frustration with the late-night deliveries and smells .
While the mayor argued he was fighting “junk food” and protecting residents’ quality of life , his actions soon drew national attention. The far-left party France Unbowed (LFI), accused the mayor of pursuing a policy of “gentrification” and “class contempt”. They argued that he was trying to push out a business that served the working class and immigrant communities in the transforming city where property prices have soared.
The dispute has now become a symbol of a deeper split within the French left between two visions: one that prioritizes public health and urban renewal and another that emphasizes fighting economic exclusion and what it calls a “form of social, economic, and even dietary confinement”. The mayor has returned the criticism, stating that LFI is trying to “trap working class people” in their social condition.
