Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has strongly condemned the killing of civilians by government forces in the Dayniile district of Mogadishu, describing the incident as tragic, unconstitutional, and unacceptable.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Farmaajo expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the civilians who lost their lives and prayed for the swift recovery of those injured during the incident.
“It is deeply unfortunate that government forces, established to defend the nation and protect its people, are instead being used to kill and mistreat innocent civilians and forcibly displace them from areas they have lived in for years,” Farmaajo said.
He described the incident as a brutal act that clearly violates Somalia’s constitution, the rule of law, and the moral foundations of statehood, stressing that such actions cannot be justified under any circumstances.
The former president called on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to immediately halt what he described as the forced displacement and abuse of unarmed civilians. He urged the country’s leadership to focus on urgent national priorities, including strengthening national unity, safeguarding Somalia’s territorial integrity, responding to communities suffering from prolonged drought, and ensuring the timely organization of an inclusive national election.
Farmaajo emphasized that protecting civilians and respecting constitutional principles are fundamental responsibilities of any legitimate government, warning that continued violations risk eroding public trust and worsening instability.
The incident in Dayniile has sparked widespread public concern and renewed debate over the conduct of security forces and the protection of civilians during government operations in the Somali capital.
