A severe drought is currently affecting Mudug region, causing widespread hardship for both residents and livestock across several districts. The prolonged dry conditions have resulted in acute water shortages and deteriorating living conditions, as the expected seasonal rains have failed to reach the area.

The districts most affected by the drought include Hobyo, Xarardheere, Wisil, Afbarwaaqo, and Bandiiradley. Many pastoralist families are struggling to cope with the harsh conditions, while livestock are facing critical shortages of water and pasture, putting their survival at serious risk.

Authorities in Galmudug State have warned local communities against cutting down trees, stressing that deforestation worsens environmental degradation and accelerates the impact of climate change. The administration has called for practical and sustainable measures to protect the environment, urging residents to preserve natural resources as a key step in reducing the long-term effects of recurring droughts.

Humanitarian needs in the region are rapidly increasing, with urgent assistance required in the form of clean water, food supplies, and basic healthcare services. Without immediate intervention, the drought is expected to further endanger vulnerable communities and lead to greater losses of livestock, which remain the primary source of livelihood for many families in Mudug.

Local authorities and humanitarian organizations are appealing for swift and coordinated emergency support to alleviate the suffering of affected populations and prevent the situation from worsening.
