The United Nations Security Council is set to convene an emergency meeting on Monday following Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, a move that has triggered sharp diplomatic tensions and widespread condemnation from Somalia and key regional actors.
The urgent session comes at a particularly sensitive moment, just days before Somalia is due to formally assume the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, further elevating the political stakes surrounding the issue.
Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, confirmed the meeting on Saturday, saying discussions would focus on the political implications of Israel’s recognition of Somaliland and the broader regional consequences of the decision.
“The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Monday following Israel’s recognition of the Republic of Somaliland,” Danon wrote on X. “We will not shy away from political debates. The move by Israel has sparked strong backlash from the Federal Government of Somalia, which has declared the recognition “null and void,” insisting that Somaliland remains an inseparable part of Somalia’s internationally recognized territory. Mogadishu argues that Israel’s decision violates international law and long-standing United Nations resolutions that uphold Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
The emergency meeting places the dispute squarely before the world’s most powerful diplomatic body, where Somalia is expected to push for a reaffirmation of existing UN resolutions and principles prohibiting unilateral recognition of breakaway regions.
