The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has strongly rejected any recognition of Somaliland, reiterating the African Union’s steadfast commitment to the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

In a statement released today, Chairperson Youssouf expressed deep concern over recent developments relating to Somaliland and reaffirmed the longstanding position of the African Union, based on the principles enshrined in the AU Constitutive Act. He emphasized the importance of respecting the intangibility of borders inherited at independence, as affirmed by the Organization of African Unity in 1964.

The Chairperson firmly underscored that Somaliland remains an integral part of Somalia and that any attempt to recognize it as an independent entity would directly contravene the African Union’s core principles. Such actions, he warned, could set a dangerous precedent with far-reaching consequences for peace and stability across the continent.

H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf further reiterated the AU’s full support for the Somali authorities in their efforts to consolidate peace, strengthen state institutions, and promote inclusive governance. He emphasized that the African Union remains committed to assisting Somalia in achieving sustainable stability and development, in accordance with international law and regional frameworks.
