The Council of Ministers of the Federal Government of Somalia today held its weekly meeting, during which it discussed the country’s electoral process, particularly the upcoming local council elections scheduled to take place this month in the capital, Mogadishu. The Cabinet also approved several important laws and policies vital to national governance.
The Ministers received a briefing from the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation on preparations for the Mogadishu local council elections. The report covered security arrangements at polling stations and the number of citizens who have collected their voter cards and are ready to cast their ballots.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre commended ministers for their engagement with communities, emphasizing the importance of close interaction between the government and the public. He praised their efforts to actively participate in election awareness and mobilization campaigns.
The Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, approved amendments to the Central Bank of Somalia Law, aimed at strengthening the financial system and enhancing transparency within economic institutions. The Council also endorsed the National Defence Bill, designed to improve the capacity and responsibilities of the country’s security institutions.
In addition, the Cabinet held extensive deliberations and approved the Child Rights Bill and the Family Law Bill, both intended to protect children’s rights, strengthen families, and establish a comprehensive legal framework. These bills have passed all legislative procedures, including consultations with religious scholars, with detailed briefings provided by officials from the Office of the Attorney General and the Ministry of Constitution. The relevant ministries were instructed to make minor revisions related to specific terminology.
Furthermore, the Council of Ministers approved the policy and regulations of the National Education Development Fund (NEDF), aimed at improving the quality of education nationwide and ensuring sustainable funding mechanisms to support Somali students.
The meeting underscored the government’s continued focus on democratic processes, legal reform, institutional strengthening, and social development.
