The Federal Government of Somalia, in collaboration with the Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Dr. Guleed Abdiqadir Artan, has deployed a group of officials to participate in a specialized capacity-building training on weather and climate services.
The delegation includes technical staff from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), the Civil Aviation Authority, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Water, the Permanent Mission of Somalia to WMO, and representatives from the media sector.
The participants are attending national and regional-level training sessions taking place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 15–19 December 2025. The workshop is organized by the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) under the WISER PASS–EA National Synergy Building Workshop framework, with participation from Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, and Sudan.
The primary objective of the training is to strengthen collaboration between National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) and climate-sensitive sectors such as Health, Disaster Risk Management, Agriculture, Water, and Energy. The initiative aims to improve the delivery, accessibility, use, and uptake of seasonal climate forecasting services, enhancing early warning systems and climate-informed decision-making across the region.
This engagement reflects Somalia’s continued commitment to climate resilience, disaster preparedness, and institutional coordination, particularly in addressing the growing impacts of climate change on vulnerable sectors and communities.
