Australia allows civilian ownership of certain firearms, although high-powered assault weapons that can cause large-scale casualties are prohibited. The recent incident, carried out by a father and son targeting Jewish attendees at a gathering, has intensified calls for stricter gun regulations nationwide. Many others were injured in the attack, which has drawn widespread condemnation both domestically and internationally.
The Sydney government is expected to issue urgent measures banning the purchase and possession of firearms to prevent similar attacks in the future.
The United States, maintaining close ties with Australia, strongly condemned the attack. The U.S. Secretary of State emphasized that such acts of violence are unacceptable and must not be ignored, expressing solidarity with the victims and their families.
