The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mohamud Maalim Abdulle, held a key meeting with the United States Ambassador to Somalia, Richard H. Riley IV, at the US Embassy in Mogadishu.
The discussion focused on enhancing humanitarian cooperation and exploring ways to expand effective support, recognizing that the United States has been Somalia’s largest donor over the past decade, providing more than USD 7 billion in humanitarian and development aid.
During the severe 2022 drought, the US government quickly provided Somalia with USD 1.3 billion, including over USD 700 million in direct humanitarian assistance, playing a critical role in preventing famine and supporting communities affected by the crisis.
The two sides also discussed the US role in the near future, particularly how Washington could take a leading position in responding to the ongoing drought and escalating humanitarian challenges in the country.
Finally, SoDMA Commissioner Maxamuud Macallin Cabdulle thanked the US Embassy and government for their continued support of humanitarian operations and efforts to strengthen Somalia’s governmental institutions.
