The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has announced a two-month extension of its free national ID registration period, giving citizens until January 31, 2026, to obtain their identification cards without charge. After this date, the agency will impose fees on new registrants.
NIRA, Somalia’s central agency responsible for issuing national identification, has extended the initial deadline for free registration to allow more citizens to enroll. In a public notice, the authority urged eligible individuals to register before the end of January, after which fees will apply.
The national ID is set to become mandatory for international travel starting in January 2026. This aligns with Somalia’s ongoing efforts to establish a formal, centralized system of citizen identification—a critical step for governance, security, and access to services. According to NIRA, nearly one million citizens have already registered, with most receiving their IDs free of charge.
While NIRA has established registration centers in several federal member states, the rollout has faced opposition in some regions. This reflects ongoing political and administrative challenges in implementing federal projects uniformly across Somalia.
All Somali citizens who have not yet registered for a national ID are encouraged to do so before the deadline. The move particularly impacts those planning to travel abroad after January 2026, as the ID will become a required travel document.
The national ID initiative is part of Somalia’s larger state-building and digital infrastructure projects, supported by international partners. A reliable identification system is foundational for elections, social services, financial inclusion, and combating identity fraud.
NIRA’s extension of the free registration period represents a significant effort to broaden inclusion and ensure more citizens can obtain official identification. However, the varying levels of cooperation from federal member states highlight the continuing challenges of national integration.
