U.S. President Donald Trump has once again made headlines for remarks widely described as inflammatory and discriminatory toward Somali-Americans. Speaking at a press event aboard Air Force One, Trump suggested that Somali immigrants could be expelled from the United States.
Trump also questioned the legitimacy of Somalia’s government and security forces.”Countries like Somalia, without a real government or an effective military, and where people are only killing each other, send their citizens to our country telling us how to run it. We do not want them here,” he said.
Earlier this week, Trump made similar remarks about Somali communities in Minnesota, claiming that “hundreds of thousands of refugees from Somalia have completely taken over the state,” referencing the large Somali-American population in the region.
Throughout both his previous and current tenure, Trump has been widely criticized for statements and policies perceived as hostile toward Somalis. During his first term, he implemented travel restrictions affecting several African nations, including Somalia. Observers note that his recent comments indicate a continuation of this approach.
The remarks have sparked concern among Somali-American leaders and civil rights advocates, who argue that such rhetoric fuels discrimination and social division within U.S. communities.
