Somalia’s Minister of Internal Security, General Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail (Fartaag), participated in the 93rd General Assembly of Interpol, held this year in Marrakech, Morocco. The high-level global forum brought together security leaders from across the world to discuss collective efforts in combating transnational crime and enhancing international cooperation.
During the assembly, Minister Fartaag held a bilateral meeting with Interpol President Ahmed Naser to discuss ways of strengthening security cooperation between Somalia and the organization. Their discussions centered on key priorities such as combating organized crime, preventing and countering terrorism, and improving the exchange of international security information. The Minister also emphasized the importance of technical support and training for Somali security agencies, which Interpol pledged to continue enhancing.
The Minister expressed Somalia’s strong commitment to contributing to global security efforts and thanked Interpol for its continued role in supporting the security capacities of member states. He emphasized that Somalia views international cooperation as a vital pillar in its ongoing security reforms and operations against extremist groups and criminal networks.
For his part, Interpol President Ahmed Naser praised the Federal Government of Somalia for its ongoing security reforms and its determination to confront threats posed by terrorism and international criminal organizations. He assured Minister Fartaag that Interpol will expand its technical assistance, capacity-building programs, and support to enhance Somalia’s law enforcement capabilities.
This year’s 93rd General Assembly placed special emphasis on emerging global threats, including cybercrime, illicit trafficking, and the evolving tactics of international terror groups. Somalia’s active participation highlighted its increasingly significant role in regional stability and global security partnerships.
Minister Fartaag is expected to hold additional meetings with security leaders from various member states to further strengthen cooperation and explore new areas of collaboration in the days ahead.
