The Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hamza Abdi Barre, on Sunday laid the foundation stone for the construction of the new National Agricultural Research Institute, expressing high hopes that the facility will produce skilled Somali agricultural experts capable of transforming the country’s food production systems.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Prime Minister Hamza underscored that agriculture remains the backbone of Somalia’s economy and a critical pillar for sustainable development. He emphasized that the government’s DanQaran agenda prioritizes increasing domestic food production at a time when global food insecurity is rising, forcing many countries to halt exports of essential crops.
“Our land is highly fertile and supported by abundant water resources. Somalia has the capacity to achieve agricultural self-sufficiency if we fully invest in developing our farming sector,” Prime Minister Hamza stated.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening an economy driven by agriculture and livestock, noting that these sectors offer the highest potential for growth, job creation, and improved livelihoods across the nation.
The Prime Minister also praised the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation for its ongoing efforts to mobilize farmers, improve cooperative structures, and expand technical training. He stressed the need for increased awareness and knowledge among farmers and called on Somali entrepreneurs to rethink their investment strategies and channel resources into local production, particularly agriculture, which he described as rich with economic opportunity.
“Somalia is strategically located in a region vital to global trade, and many countries are ready to invest in our nation, especially in agriculture and livestock,” Prime Minister Hamza added.
The establishment of the National Agricultural Research Institute is expected to support scientific innovation, modern farming techniques, and improved crop yields — key steps toward achieving long-term food security and economic independence.
