The Federal Government of Somalia’s Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport, Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur, on Thursday officially laid the foundation for a major road construction project at Mogadishu Port, signaling a significant step forward in the ongoing modernization and development of Somalia’s primary maritime hub. The project is designed to improve internal traffic flow within the port, facilitate the movement of goods and services, and enhance the overall functionality and aesthetic appeal of the port.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by a number of high-ranking officials, including the Director General of Mogadishu Port, Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur (America), the port’s deputy managers, and the head of Mogadishu Alport Company, which is overseeing the implementation of the project. During the ceremony, Minister Abdulqadir emphasized the importance of developing infrastructure that supports economic growth, trade efficiency, and the long-term competitiveness of the port at both regional and international levels.
“This project represents more than just road construction; it reflects our commitment to transforming Mogadishu Port into a modern, efficient, and fully functional maritime facility that meets international standards,” Minister Abdulqadir said. “By improving accessibility and traffic flow within the port, we are creating an environment that will benefit traders, shipping companies, and the Somali economy as a whole.”
The road construction initiative is part of a broader set of development projects underway at Mogadishu Port, aimed at expanding capacity, improving operational efficiency, and modernizing facilities to meet the increasing demands of maritime trade. Since emerging as one of the most advanced and well-serviced ports in Africa, Mogadishu Port has experienced a significant increase in daily operations, with work continuing around the clock to ensure smooth handling of cargo and effective management of port activities.
Officials at the ceremony noted that the development will not only improve the port’s logistics and operational capacity but also contribute to the overall economic development of Mogadishu and surrounding regions. The project will also help enhance the port’s image and attractiveness to international investors and shipping companies, further positioning Somalia as a strategic trade and maritime hub in East Africa.
