DHUUSAMAREEB, Somalia – In a swift and high-profile operation, the Galmudug regional state of Somalia has apprehended three men accused of the brutal murder of a mother and her three young daughters, a killing that has sent shockwaves through the community and highlighted the persistent issue of clan-based violence in the country’s central regions.

The Galmudug Ministry of Security presented the three suspects at a press conference on October 11, 2025. They are alleged to be behind a recent attack in the Qaayib area of Galgaduud region, where a family was targeted in their home. The victims have been identified as Sahro Artan Hirsi and her three daughters: Nurto, Hawo, and Fa’iso Ahmed Mohamud. According to local sources, the family was attacked while they slept, with the assailants shooting them in the head. Another individual present was also injured in the assault.

  • The Victims: Sahro Artan Hirsi and her three daughters.
  • The Accused: Three men, described as fugitives, who were captured in what authorities called a “well-planned and thoroughly investigated operation.”
  • The Authorities: The Galmudug regional police and Darawishta (a special police unit) conducted the operation, which was announced by Galmudug Security Minister Aadan Warsame Ilmi (Deeg Gargareeto).

The murders took place in the Qaayib area, within the Galgaduud region of central Somalia, a territory administered by the Galmudug state. The attack occurred just days before the suspects were apprehended.

Minister Aadan Warsame stated that the suspects were arrested in a coordinated security operation. He emphasized that the case would be fast-tracked, confirming that “the case will be immediately forwarded to a court,” and that the public would be updated on further developments. This promises a firm judicial response to the crime.

While the investigation is ongoing, local reports and the region’s recent history strongly suggest a motive rooted in clan vendetta (aano qabiil). The Galgaduud region has been plagued by a cycle of retaliatory killings. This tragedy is the latest in a series of targeted assassinations, including the recent murders of two young doctors in the town of Galkayo, which were also attributed to clan animosity. These incidents reveal the severe challenges facing local administrations in curbing deeply entrenched, extra-judicial violence that undermines the rule of law.

This horrific crime underscores a critical challenge for Somalia’s regional states: establishing security and justice in areas where traditional clan conflicts often supersede state authority. The swift arrest and promise of a trial represent a significant effort by the Galmudug administration to assert its governance and demonstrate that such acts will not go unpunished. It is a public test of the state’s judicial and security capabilities.

The arrest of three suspects in the murder of Sahro Artan Hirsi and her daughters is a crucial step toward justice for a heinous crime that has horrified the nation. However, it also casts a stark light on the pervasive culture of clan-based violence that continues to threaten the lives and stability of communities in central Somalia. The effectiveness and transparency of the upcoming trial will be closely watched, as its outcome will not only determine the fate of the accused but also serve as a major indicator of whether regional governments can successfully break the devastating cycle of vendetta violence and impose the rule of law.
