Thirteen workers were killed and 66 others injured in a technical explosion at the Barzan gas supply facility in Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City on Sunday, June 21, 2026. The incident occurred as crews attempted to restart operations that had been suspended for months following regional conflict.

The tragedy comes at a critical juncture for Qatar, which is attempting to restore energy output amid the ongoing volatility of the Iran war. As one of the world’s leading liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporters, Qatar has faced significant infrastructure challenges since March, when Iranian missile strikes damaged parts of the same industrial complex. While officials have categorized the latest blast as a “technical accident” rather than sabotage, the event underscores the complex and high-stakes nature of reviving industrial operations in a conflict-prone region.

“This was an accident and not a sabotage or hostile in nature,” said Qatar’s Energy Minister, Saad al-Kaabi, during a press conference on June 22.

He confirmed that the fire had been brought under control and that the facility’s export capabilities remained unaffected.

Meanwhile, the international community has expressed its support for the Gulf state. The Federal Republic of Somalia issued an official statement pledging its solidarity with Qatar following the disaster. Other nations have also extended their condolences, particularly as the casualties were confirmed to include foreign nationals. According to the Indian Embassy in Doha, 12 of the 13 victims were Indian citizens.

While the plant’s export capacity for global markets is reportedly stable, authorities remain focused on the ongoing investigation into the specific technical malfunction that triggered the blast. The incident has drawn renewed attention to the broader dangers of rapid industrial restarts in the Gulf, where infrastructure is under immense pressure to meet global energy demands following long-term production disruptions.
