The rise of the Turkish language in Somalia raises a real question: Could it eventually replace Arabic as the country’s default second language?

An estimated 100,000 Somalis can now speak Turkish. That number is growing fast, according to language educators in Mogadishu. Turkish-run schools are expanding across the capital. Meanwhile, business ties with Turkish companies are fueling new demand for the language.

Arabic remains Somalia’s official second language under the constitution. However, some educators now believe Turkish could eventually rival it. The trend reflects a broader shift in Turkish-Somali relations over the past decade.

Turkish Schools Take Root in Mogadishu

Turkish-run Maarif schools now operate in both Mogadishu and Hargeisa. Together, they teach Turkish alongside English and Arabic. More than 1,000 students attend these schools. As a result, many graduates leave fluent in three languages instead of two.

Business Ties Drive Demand

Turkish companies have expanded steadily across Mogadishu in recent years. Consequently, many young Somalis are learning Turkish for work, not just school. Interpreters and business graduates are increasingly finding jobs with these firms. Meanwhile, many other students study Turkish specifically to qualify for university admission in Turkey.

Could Turkish Rival Arabic?

Arabic still holds constitutional status as Somalia’s second language. Still, some language experts argue Turkish is closing the gap. If current trends continue, they say, Turkish could become the most-taught second language in Somali schools. That would mark a significant shift in the country’s linguistic landscape.

For now, the claim remains a prediction, not a settled fact. But the numbers behind it are real, and growing.
