Al-Shabaab militants launched coordinated attacks on two Kenyan military positions in the Fiino and Carabiya areas on the outskirts of Mandera town in Kenya’s North Eastern region on Saturday, triggering heavy exchanges of gunfire that left the border zone on high alert.
The assaults targeted Kenyan Defence Force outposts near the Somali border, a volatile corridor where Al-Shabaab retains a significant operational presence across the Jubaland regions of southern Somalia and frequently stages cross-border raids. The attacks come as Kenyan security forces have intensified counter-terrorism operations along the frontier, with intelligence-led raids killing 11 militants in Mandera County just two weeks ago.
Militants struck the first position in the Fiino area, targeting a Kenyan military base there, according to local sources. A second attack followed in the Carabiya area, also within Mandera’s outskirts, where additional Al-Shabaab fighters engaged Kenyan forces.
The official casualty toll from both attacks and the subsequent firefights remains unclear, as the targeted positions are Kenyan military installations. Kenyan security officials have not yet issued any statement regarding the assaults or whether follow-up operations have been conducted.
The situation along the Kenya-Somalia border remains tense, with increased security force movements reported in several areas. Al-Shabaab fighters frequently use the porous border to launch attacks before retreating into Somali territory, where the group maintains strongholds in the southern Jubaland regions.
“Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaida-linked militant group based in Somalia, has carried out numerous attacks in Kenya over the past decade, particularly in areas near the shared border,” analysts note.
Kenyan authorities have stepped up intelligence-led operations to prevent cross-border assaults, recently killing 11 suspected Al-Shabaab militants and recovering three PKM machine guns and 409 rounds of ammunition in a raid near the Esagur Cutline area. Security forces have also foiled planned attacks on border villages in Mandera County.
Saturday’s attacks underscore the persistent threat Al-Shabaab poses to Kenya’s northeastern region, despite ongoing counter-terrorism efforts by both Kenyan and allied forces.
