The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) confirmed the death of the veteran lawyer on Friday, describing him not merely as legal counsel but as a “comrade in struggle” who single-handedly carried the fight for freedom of association through the highest corridors of power for over a decade.
Known for his razor-sharp intellect and absolute fearlessness, Advocate Tahlil did not just practice law; he weaponized it. At a time when the very existence of NUSOJ was hanging by a thread amid intense government pressure and institutional attacks, Mr. Tahlil was the only shield the journalists had.
He made history by filing the first-ever case against the Somali government to defend the fundamental right to freedom of association. He took that battle all the way to the Supreme Court, securing a landmark, unanimous ruling that cemented trade union freedoms in the nation’s legal landscape.
But his vision extended far beyond the borders of Somalia.
In what many legal analysts call a masterclass in international advocacy, Advocate Tahlil elevated the local struggle to a global stage. He took the journalists’ plight to the United Nations Human Rights Council and the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva. The result was a decisive victory, with top UN human rights experts issuing unanimous support for NUSOJ’s case against government overreach.
His relentless lobbying also made waves in Europe, contributing directly to the European Parliament’s first-ever resolution addressing the crackdown on freedom of expression and association in Somalia, explicitly recognizing NUSOJ’s right to exist as an independent entity.
“We have lost a fearless defender, but his legacy will continue to guide our struggle,” said Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ Secretary-General, in a moving tribute.
“In our darkest moments, when the very existence of our union was under threat, he did not hesitate. He fought with courage, clarity, and conviction. With him, we defeated the enemies of fundamental rights and equally embarrassed the naysayers,” Mr. Osman added.
Advocate Tahlil Haji Hussein leaves behind a Somalia that is slightly more just than the one he found, a profession forever indebted, and a legacy written not in court filings but in the freedom of every Somali voice.
