The African Union has once again reiterated its firm opposition to what it described as Israel’s violation against Somalia’s sovereignty.

In a strongly worded communiqué, the African Union clearly condemned and rejected the reported unilateral recognition of Somaliland by Israel. The continental body reaffirmed its longstanding position on safeguarding the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

The summit also endorsed the statement issued on December 26, 2025, by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, which explicitly rejected any initiative or action aimed at recognizing Somaliland.

African leaders emphasized that any unilateral recognition would contradict the fundamental principles of the African Union and the United Nations Charter, and could pose serious risks to peace, stability, and unity across the African continent.

The African Union Council further underscored the importance of respecting internationally recognized borders and resolving disputes through dialogue and legal frameworks consistent with continental and international law.
