President Mohamud highlights Africa’s role in peacekeeping and global security

The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, attended a high-level meeting on the future of the United Nations held in Addis Ababa. The meeting was part of key side events during the African Union Heads of State Summit.

President Mohamud highlighted that the United Nations has faced challenges including protracted conflicts, political struggles, and financial pressures. He emphasized the urgent need for reform to align the UN system with today’s global realities, in order to strengthen its effectiveness and credibility.

He also noted Africa’s critical role in global peace and security, pointing out that African countries are at the forefront of peacekeeping operations and stabilization efforts. The President stressed that the continent remains underrepresented in the UN Security Council, a situation that requires immediate review.

Furthermore, President Mohamud called for unity and sustained diplomacy to achieve genuine reforms based on justice and equality. He reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to supporting and revitalizing the United Nations to build a global system where all continents have equal participation and representation.
