African Union Peace and Security Council Condemns Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland, Reaffirms Support for Somalia’s Unity

The African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) has strongly condemned Israel’s decision to recognize the Somaliland administration, describing the move as a unilateral action that contradicts the fundamental principles of the African Union and international law.

The condemnation was issued during the AU PSC’s 1324th Ministerial Meeting, where the Council adopted an urgent statement rejecting the recognition and warning against actions that undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of African Union member states.

In its statement, the Council emphasized that any recognition affecting sovereignty, unity, or borders must fully comply with the provisions of the AU Constitutive Act, the Protocol of the Peace and Security Council, and the Charter of the United Nations. It stressed that unilateral decisions taken outside these legal frameworks are inconsistent with established international norms.

The AU Peace and Security Council reaffirmed its full and unwavering support for the sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and stability of the Federal Republic of Somalia. It urged all international stakeholders to respect the internationally recognized borders and constitutional structures of African Union member states.

The Council further underlined that no state, institution, or entity has the legal authority to alter the territorial configuration of an AU member state. It described statements or actions suggesting otherwise as baseless and without legal validity under international law.

In concluding its statement, the AU PSC reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to continued engagement with the international community to strengthen stability, unity, and respect for the international system of statehood across the continent.

The decision highlights the African Union’s long-standing position on preserving colonial-era borders, safeguarding state sovereignty, and preventing actions that could fuel instability or conflict in Africa and beyond.
